The switch on my 53 is similar but it's not exactly the same as you're showing. See my photo below. On my 53 there is an adjustment to fine tune when the backup lights come on. Make sure your bushing isn't bad allowing the end of the shaft to flop around. If it's like my 53 and it's loose it'll break any replacement switch you put on.

Thanks Rusty 37 Master I do have backup lights and it looks like they connected to the switch. They I need to do a little more investigating. The taillights, brake lights and turn signals work fine. I there a way to hookup emergency flashers to the car?
I may be wrong but with BU lamps it may be 4 tewrinals. From 1939-1952 I lived across the street on the west side of the fair park. From 1953-1977 I worked at the Chevrolet Dealer across from the fair park - on the south side. Inow live on the far western side of WA so not close to the fair park
I would encourage you to get your current electrical problems sorted out first.
Then I would proceed cautiously if trying to add a 4 way flasher. A prior owner had installed an aftermarket 4 way flasher on another classic car I own. It never worked correctly and actually reduced the brightness of the existing turn signals. I will admit that the quality of the wiring connections was marginal at best and there were some ground issues with the turn signals.
This is related to your thoughts about adding a 4 way flasher.
I apologize that I do not remember all the details about the turn signals on your car.
What I do remember is some prior posts and threads about problems and troubleshooting the turn signals on ‘53 & ‘54 cars. There is something different about how the dash board indicators lights are wired into the circuit.
That could create issues if you try to add a 4 way flasher.
Once you get your neutral start and back-up light issues resolved you should search this forum for turn signal posts.
