Hi all,

Lurch is under the knife!

If you remember from his report about our trip to Porterville in 2022 (Lurch Goes On Tour), a 'squeal' noise started at the end of the week that seemed to be coming from his clutch area.

I believe the cause was a worn clutch, but as I perform surgery on him, I'll inspect everything and see what else needs attention.

The first thing that I want your opinions about is the u-joint trunnion (the donut bearings) clearance to the yokes. I measure .004" difference between the trunnions' ID and the yoke OD.

I think that this clearance is acceptable, but I want your opinions on whether I should try and find some trunnions that are in better shape. Lurch doesn't do any 'hard' work anymore, so the load on these trunnions is not much.

BTW, even though I have a 4-speed transmission in Lurch, the u-joint is a 1927 unit so the trunnions are the same as was used in cars and 1/2 ton trucks (part number 351188). The trunnions for the '28 (LO and LP) one ton trucks use larger trunnions (part number 352813).

Thanks, Dean

I don't think there is any problem with 0.004" difference. In fact think that is in the range I would expect with the high viscosity transmission and U-joint lube.
