is TOP DEAD CENTER on a 56 235 the center of the triangle and then you time with the ball lining up with the pointer if thats the right way been going about wrong i have been lining up the ball thinking that is TDC i have already set the valves by using the ball as tdc will that be close enough or will they have to be reset thanks for any help

I did not realize that the '56 235 had the ball and pointer in the flywheel housing. I normally set the timing on that generation engine using the mark on the harmonic balancer and the timing tab on the front of the engine.
The best way to determine real TDC is the screwdriver down the spark plug hole and slowly turn the engine method. Then you can check that against whatever marks you have been using.
On the older 216's I know that the ball was at 5 degrees BTDC. For setting valves that is not enough to make a difference. The lifter is on the base circle for a lot longer that 5 degrees of rotation.

oops forgot to say i am using a 56-235 in my 50 coupe i changed the the front engine plate with the original 50 plate so that i would have the motor mount holes and also the timing chain cover is from the the 50 am also using the bellhousing and flywheel from the 216 so therefore i do not have the 56 front tab i have the distributor pointed at #1 cylinder so thats half the battle am glad the valve setting are good enough i will set the octane selector to zero and get timing light and see where i am at thanks for the reply

Thanks for the additional information. Now things make more sense.
That small amount of difference between the ball and pointer being aligned and TDC is not a concern when setting the valves.
I would set the initial timing by turning the distributor until #1 would spark. Just make sure you are rotating the distributor in the direction opposite the rotor rotation.
