Can no longer stand the massive amount of noise from my standard transmission in my 49 Chevy business coupe. Thinking of putting in a Powerglide. Anyone ever done this or have any advice?

Have you considered having the transmission rebuilt? It would be a lot cheaper than trying to convert to a Powerglide.
I assume that the gear lube level is where it should be. I expect the what you call excess transmission noise is due to worn bearings and gears.
What tests have you done to confirm that the noise is from the transmission and not the engine or rear axle or clutch?
Have you had a chance to drive an early 50’s Chevy with a Powerglide? That would let you experience the noise level.

It is not a simple task.
Does the noise come in in high gear? There should be no trans. noise in high gear.
With an engine with solid lifters the engine sounds strange with ( Power glide) at speeds under 50 MPH because it is free to rev and any little change in throttle position.
I would recomend getting a different car with Power Glide.

I had a '49 Chevy when I was in high school, the transmission was not noisy at all. Something must be wrong with the transmission if it it making enough noise to be annoying!
