I would like to replace the screws of a Carter 284s Carburetor installed in my 1935 Chevrolet Standard. Please see the attached photos of the carburetor before disassembly. Note that some of the heads of the screws are damaged.
Although the screw size is standard, it is important to find screws with the same head type and the same finish. Does anyone know where to order authentic replacement screws?
I have a seen a lot worse! You can clean-up the one with a file.
One way to get original style screws is to buy another W-1. Another way is to check with some VCCA members who rebuild W-1’s in case they have parts from older damaged carbs that cannot be rebuilt.
The screws pictured look to be in good shape. They can be cleaned by several means. Carburetor cleaner and wire brush should do it or Sonic cleaner, etc
I ordered replacement screws from McMaster-Carr when I was rebuilding W-1 carbs. Unfortunately they come 100 to a box. Dean Echols a VCCA member rebuilds W-1s. Maybe he will sell you a few screws.
If the slots in the screw heads are damaged they can be somewhat repaired. Load a few extra nuts on and clamp in a vise and then gently peen the head a little to close the gap and refile the slot. May not be perfect but can be a lot better.
