My 39 Master Deluxe does not have the right side dome light switch as described. Was the switch an option, or did the 39 use the light switch to turn on?
Thanks, Tom

WHAT BODY STYLE IS YOUR 1939?

If it is a coupe the switch is on the lamp, The sedan models on the right post.

1955 was the first year to be on the light switch.

I guess I'm missing the switch on the dome. All that is there is a screw.
Thanks for the info.

If your switch is in the light it's a push/pull switch. The knob/lever screws into the switch. I don't know the thread.

I have an Australian truck which could well be the difference but the remains of the cab light indicate the switching was done by actually rotating the globe holder to connect the base of the globe with 2 contacts behind it.

Although I have a 2dr. sedan, I believe your picture is what was original on my car, I took the dome light off, there is a single wire to the bulb, which runs to the dash, and the metal frame goes to ground somehow. The on-off switch is long broken and gone.
I will put in a new bulb housing, and switch at dash.

The wire going to the switch is the ground.

The wire is going straight to the positive on the bulb through the broken switch. The ground is through the metal part of the dome assembly. The only wire running to the light would have to be positive as the ground is as described.

The wiring diagram shows the wire to be the hot wire.

the wire running to the light is hot at all time and the switch completes the circuit for the ground.

There has been a lot of confusion here. Is the car a Master Deluxe? Is it a 4 passenger coupe. 2 passenger coupe. a 2 door sedam or a 4 door sedan?

If it is a 2 door or 4 door sedan the switch should be on the pillar unless some one screwed around ith it and then there is no telling what you have.
.All Master 85 models had the switch on the light as well as both Master Deluxe coupes.

The car is a 1939 2dr. sedan master deluxe. The upholstery is all original, the pillar has not been altered. As Tiny stated and as the diagram shows, the wire is hot, there should be a switch at the light, and the unit is grounded to the body at some point.
My light had a switch at the light that was broken, and grounding out the hot wire running to the light. After removing the light and removing the switch, the wire was no longer grounded. at that time I found the metal fixture provides the ground.
