I've had this engine sitting in a cradle for a few years. I got it from a fellow parting out misc '31 items. I don't know its history but the mice currently love it.
Cylinder head is a 1931, p/n 836 273.
Engine block is a 1932, p/n 836 573

Question: Since they are assembled together, can I assume the '31 head is backwards compatible with a '32 block ? I recall only the push rods need to be modified in order to get a working engine. Can anyone refresh my memory ?

1929 - 1933 heads will bolt up to '29-'33 years blocks. There are several changes over those years to valve trains (valves, rocker arms, shafts, push rods, etc.). The '31 head on a '32 block will not be a problem as long as the '29-'31 rocker assembly is used. '31 or '32 push rods are the same. '29-'30 are two piece push rods but the same length so can be used as well.

Thanks Chipper for the thorough explanation. I was cleaning out the barn and considered finding another home for the engine. It would probably be wise to keep it in the event my current running '32 engine head/block develops a problem. I should pull the head someday and have an engine shop inspect for cracks, etc.

Meanwhile it's been 7-8 years since you rebuilt my Carter carb and it's still running fine. Never adjusted anything on it. beer2
