Hello !

My distributor Delco Remy 635B is worn out, i want to go with modern technology so i want electronic ignition !

I've heard a Bosch 009 from VW aircooled can be utilised into a 1928 chevrolet with little modification ( put the gear on i guess )

anybody have do this mod ? another dizzy can be utilised ? which mod are needed on the 009 to clear in the 28 chev' ?

i also live in europa so NOS part are hard to find and expensive, VW parts are much simpler and cheaper to have !!

Thanks you for your answer !

have a great ride

I do not know about an entire distributor, but you should be able to put a Pertronix set up into your distributor. I have seen a u-tube segment where the owner used modern components to modify an original dist. to electronic. I have a '28 4 cylinder that has an Autolite distributor with a vacuum advance mounted in it. The engine was rebuilt by a PO and I have not started it.

Hello
been running a Electronic Ignition for some time on my 1928 chevy it works great the pertronix 6v kit and there coil you have to use the right coil you have to make sure you have 5v to the coil as this is what it needs. make sure you have good battery and cables good battery and ground i use 1/0 cable and soldered ends also i used Optima battery 6v not cheap i also have a 6v alt. not a generator i can say that i turn on gas valve pull choke crank starter turn on ign. switch wait 5 sec.it start right up never have to crank motor over like i used to. And a good elect. system is key i hope this helps in your decision making rick

Just my experience and 5 cents worth.I was asked a number of years ago to install a electronic ignition system on my '28 Chevy. It was made by a FS Ignitions Ponca City OK and used pertronix unit. After running it for a little over 2 years it failed. Luckily the car was in my shop when that happened. I re-installed the original points and have had no problems the past ~ 10 years and several thousand miles. When it worked I couldn't tell any real difference between the EI and original. The real problem is once the EI quits you call the tow truck. With points there are plenty of things you can do to get the car home.

Chipper, I 100% agree on leaving the points well enough alone. However, the owner of this fire truck I am restoring would like to upgrade from the manual advance Delco 374A distributor that is in it. Is there a direct swap to a centrifugal advance? I seem to recall the 28 unit was an automatic advance. Would that eliminate the need to retard timing at start up and the spark lever entirely?

The late '27 and '28 distributors have a mechanical advance. If you set a '28 for the maximum advance it is still necessary to retard timing for the first daily startup as the rich initial mixture burns a little faster than the leaner restart mixture. So after the initial start it is not necessary to touch the retard lever.
