What were the octane ratings back in the 50's and 60's. I know there have been some changes in the way it is calculated because of the ethanol and being unleaded so I guess I am wondering what was available then and how a particular rating then compares to the same rating now.

I hope this makes sense.

Thanks, Pete

And along those same lines, is it better to run no ethanol gas, even if the carb and fuel pump are compatible with ethanol?...

The reason I am asking is because I am looking at a 65 Corvair with the 140 hp motor. Folks on the Corvair forum are saying I should run premium gas, especially in the summer, to prevent pinging.

Just doing a little research.

Thanks

It doesn't say the specific octane but it does say any Corvair engine other than the 95 HP should be run on premium gas.

I run premium in my Corvair particularly in the warmer weather.

I would use the preimum because if you have pre-ignition in your engine it can cause the hadened valve seats to fall out.
No use taking a chance.

We bought a new '66 Corvair Corsa, 140hp 4 carb engine w/ 3speed. It was a special order. We could have driven the same Marina Blue car home that day with a 4 speed--$64 option. My dad said--It's just another gear to shift...
