I know people have talked about using this softer industrial brake lining material.. and then, having a brake shop near you rivet the new lining on... but personally I do not know what to order or where to order the lining material... and all the brakes shops that I know of... no longer rivet on linings... so you might have to do that yourself... not much help here...

I just did a advanced search here for "brake linings".... and found out that you measure your linings width and length and order from McMaster-Carr, here..... https://www.mcmaster.com/brake-lining/
and you need to counter-sink the rivets.... and you can order the rivets & the tools at Snyders antique auto parts.... they are the same used on model A f...s..... hope this helps... it sure helped me... Enjoy

If you scroll down the page of that McMaster-Carr web page... they have several types of brake linings.. the first one has brass woven into it... I would hope that other more experienced mechanics/rebuilders, would tell us which linings are best for our mechanical brakes, with steel drums.....

Mechanical brakes need a softer lining to help your leg muscles.

McMaster-Carr most likely will be able to advise however the first listed (woven) with the brass strands would be my choice and that is what I have on my 32 though it did not come from McMaster-Carr.

Does anybody here know which of the different linings offered here at McMaster-Carr to be the softest...? are the brass embedded ones soft...?? I am sure someone here has bought from them and could recommend the best for easy gripping and which are for longer wear but not as easy gripping... hopefully someone will tell us their experience with these type of linings...

The listing for coefficient of friction is what to look at. The higher the number the more "grab" . The woven is .51 and the highest of all is .55 so the woven with the brass wire will be almost as effective at stopping and I think the wire will help to extend the wear life, keep the surface clean and dissipate some heat. As I mentioned above if you call them and tell them what you are using it for I am sure you will get all the info you need. My guess is they will recommend the woven lining. Years ago I worked for a heavy truck dealer and sold tons (literally) of brake lining and was air brake certified however much has changed since then.

I and several friends have used the McMaster-Carr high friction lining material. It has the brass strips embedded in a woven material. The riveting tool from Snyders is easy to use with a vise and drill. Press the lining to the shoe, mark the holes, drill them and then countersink using a drill press to get the same depth and finally crimp the rivets into place from the center of the shoe outward. It will take a few stops to finally flatten the linings to the shoes. They will feel like power brakes compared to modern molded linings.
