Does anyone know if some company makes a portable 6v portable battery / car starter

Are you looking for one that you can use WITHOUT being connected to a 120 electrical source , basically called a "jump starter".? I am not aware of a 6 volt one but 12volt can be used on a 6 volt for starting only .

The last time I looked into this, they were made by one company worldwide. They were available for $800 in France (yes, you read that right) and possibly some other places in Europe. That did not include delivery to the US.

Homebrewing something from an Optima and a battery maintainer would be considerably cheaper.

I know that many of us have jump started a 6 volt vehicle with a 12 volt battery. I do not know any reason you cannot use a 12 volt power pack and do the same.

I always have a second person when I do this. Make sure that all of the accessories and lights are turned off before you connect the power pack. Have one person connect the power pack to the battery and the second person start the engine immediately. As soon as the engine is running disconnect the power pack.

I have used a 12 volt booster many times in the last 50 years with no problem , just mak sure all eletrical things are turned off.s.......

Others members are correct. I have started my Coupes many,many times with 12 Volts. It spins faster and starters easier. Make sure accessories are off and disconnect the 12 Volts as soon as it starts.

I have also started 6 volt cars with a 12 volt booster many times. Just turn off all accessories and disconnect as soon as possible.

I recently bought one of the jump starter/air compressor packs from WalMart. The new ones have a 110 volt outlet on them. I rigged up one of the old aluminum reflector clamp lamps with an led bulb. Works great as a work light and a trouble light to change a tire or tie down a load in the dark when necessary. With an led I think it would easily go all night.

BEWARE. You can get by with a 12V jump because there is enough resistance in the batteries to limit the current when you connect the batteries in parallel, FOR A SHORT TIME. The resistance of the cables helps too. And you should just hold one clip on while someone else cranks.

A lithium battery has far less resistance, so the current could go very high, especially if you have good cables. Either battery could suffer a bursting event.
Lead acid batteries tend to have steam "explosions," from boiling the electrolyte. I don't know the failure mode of the lithium, but it won't be pretty.

Do a rolling start if possible.

A big hot fire that your fire extinguisher won't put out. Don't use a lithium pack for this. Just don't.

While I've not yet had to use it, I have a lithium pack as a back-up for the 38. The advantage is, using the hand throttle to set high idle and a long 1/2" extension as a pry bar to activate the starter linkage, I'll be under the hood in personal contact with the pack cables should it catch fire and will be able to quickly disconnect the pack & remove it from the engine compartment. I'd be interested in hearing the personal experiences of those who've used a 12v lithium pack to jump start their 6v vehicle.
