partially redid a 56-235 for my 50 coupe new gaskets paint etc pulled head put new head gasket when cold starts right up run it for awhile 5-10 miles engine reaches operating temp so its not over heating ( gauge works) sit for a bit it seems it cranks forever before it will start back up again is the timing too far advanced or retarded distributor was taken out while cleaning motor also do you have to retorque the head after running for a couple 200-300 miles thanks

Using vacuum advance + and - lossen the bolt holding down the advance and note where the mark is and move towards the + or _ a few degrees and try it and see if it makes any difference.

I doubt if it is a timing problem.

Sounds to me like a dragging starter. When the engine gets warm/hot a starter will drag if the armature is rubbing against a field. May be caused by a worn out bushing. Check the brushes, etc whilst you are messing around with it.

Is it cranking slow when hot or just taking a long time to fire but cranking normally?

Is the gas line too close to the exhaust manifold or the carburetor uninsulated from the manifolds? Could percolating be the cause of the problem?

Just a thought. I have had that trouble a time or two.
