I have been searching for a diagram or photo to show how the original coil would have been mounted to the head, how the coil was different from typical (from a shape/design standpoint), and how wires were routed to it.

The reason for the question is because I am trying to determine how to properly place/use the "cap" with the armored wire loom attached (I think it was a spark guard or something like that?).

This cap is in place in my car but a section of modern wire has been added to extend it to the coil and the cap has been pushed to be between the battery and firewall. I'd like to undo what is happening.

I'm sure someone will be along with the exact answer for 1940 shortly, but in that era they were often mounted at the center of the cylinder head with the cap up and the coil tower pointed down. The armored cable goes all the way to the key switch. It's called an "Electrolock", of the second design. The first design was much earlier and shorted out the points when the key was off.
