When I back up in reverse in my 54 BelAir I get a lot of clutch shutter or chatter. The car has original 235 with 3 speed manual.

Loose motor mounts or transmission mount
Defective clutch disc or pressure plate.
Use 85-140 gear oil in transnission.

I agree that the first place to look is the motor and transmissions mounts. They either get hard with age and fall apart or get oil soaked and “squishy”.

In either case they do not keep the drivetrain in position It jumps and rocks when you start moving the car.

While possible, the engine mounting system used from 1952-1954 was less vunrable tor rubber getting mushy from oil and these models have fewer mount problems but no so for the transmission mount.
General driveline wear can encourage clutch problems as wele as the rear spring to axle housing rubber and rear spring inlox (front) rubber bushings.

The motor mounts and transmission mounts were replaced in 2014 when the engine and transmission were rebuilt but never changed the rear spring to axle rubber.
