Hello everyone and experts. I am wondering, what dark gray engine painted do you guys recommend using? I have seen that the filling station is selling them again, was thinking of trying it.

What have you guys used with good results and no paint flaking after a few hundred miles? Thank you!

I used the gray from The Filling Station. There was no "standard" formula so there were minor variations in hue from batch to batch and manufacturer to manufacturer. Most accept the TFS gray to be the closest to OEM.

Bill Hirsh also sells the gray engine paint. He has the dark gray and the light gray. Either is acceptable. The color varied from plant to plant as there was no specific "formula" fo follow when mixing it up.

Hirsch does have nice paint, but as I understand it the Filling Station's color was copied from a NOS can of Chevrolet paint, and only exists because Hirsch's Chevrolet gray didn't hit very close to the mark.

There was a intense discussion about this some years ago and included a 3 way choice (Filling Station, Bill Hirsch and Chevs of The Forties) but I dont remember which 1 was declared the winner.

Bill Hirsch marketed a universal gray engine paint that he claimed was approved by a prominent VCCA member, despite numerous attempts to show him original painted parts that were darker and more blue. A intensive study using NOS parts and comparison to paint in more than one can The Filling Station began to market a much more accurate replacement. I still have a can of gray engine paint with Chevrolet logo & part number purchased from Bandeen Chevrolet in the early 1970s. It is a match to the paint sold by TFS, which is the paint I have used. Also had some mixed by local suppler matching a spray out.

Bill Hirsch passed away several years ago. Chevs of the '40s sells a darker version of his paint,
