Is there a fuse that I can purchase to put in the wiring coming off the starter to protect wiring and car. Not sure what it is called or what to get and where to put it. Anyone have experience with these.

I think it is called a fuse link. The harness I got from American Autowire included one from the starter and the alternator.

A fuseable link wire can have different Amp capacity so make sure you get at least one with a 30 Amp capacity.

This might be a matter of terminology.

From my perspective a fusible link is a sacrificial protective device. When it is overloaded and fails, it must be replaced.

An inline fuse holder has a replaceable fuse. A key point is that the wiring to and from the fuse holder must be a gauge which matches or exceeds the fuse rating.

Here in Aus most auto electricians carry the various amperage fusible link wire on a roll.

Have you considered a Circuit breaker. In the trade we call them a buzz box. When there's a short they take the current away and reset when the problem is fixed. They are used extensively in wiring electric brakes for trailers and are available in different amperages,

Do those work the same on 6 volts? It's a 51 and no mention as to changing to 12 volts.

Most circuit breakers, fuses and fusible links work on amps flowing not volts pushing and as such I have had no issues using any fuse or circuit breaker on 6 12 or 240 volt.
