On the lower forward edge of the front doors (51 Hardtop) there is a fitting that looks like a grease fitting with a washer. Anyone know what it
s actual function is?

Any chance you could put up a picture of this fitting?

I will try. It looks just like a 1/8" grease fitting except the thread is screw thread and no hole through it. One had a push nut on it . The head opposite the threaded part looks similar to a male snap fitting. I am guessing it has something to do with the door seal.

I don't remember seeing anything like it. Can you post a picture of it mounted to the car? Sometimes context makes all the difference.

They hold your door weather strip on the bottom of the door. Take a look at the attached link from Steele Rubber. You can see the hole in the w/s for those pins. The w/s attaches to that pin and goes under the door towards the rear of the of car.

Thanks Hawkeye-I had my doors repaired and those were not put back in so I will wait until installing the weatherstrip to properly install them.

Photos of door before and after repair showing the fitting mentioned above. Doors are not finished but major metal work is done.

Good job. Be sure to replace the weep hole so it doesn't rust out again. Those get blocked and they hold water after a rain which is what causes them to rust out.

I did not do the metal work. I traded a 32 front bumper w/bracket and some Ben Franklins for the work. The weep holes and some other items will need attention and that I can do. I am fortunate that I was able to trade some parts (also got fenders repaired) as most local restoration shops are charging 100-120 per hour.
