41 Chevy 216 6 volt
Asking this just incase I ever have to do this. If the battery goes dead and I have to jump the car do I have to use a 6 volt battery to do so? Can I jump it from a 12 volt or what is the emergency procedure? If I am stuck in a parking lot know one I know has a 6v jump box and I would hate to get a tow just for that.
I could get a ride home with the battery and charge it then go back and get the car but that would mean leaving it somewhere.
I have found that having an old car is a constant project that is never done. I think that is a good thing. Keeps me learning new things. Having two from different eras is just a form of higher education.

I have jump started 6 volt cars with 12 volts many times. Just be sure all lights and accessories are turned off and only leave it connected long enough to start the engine.

 It works great if you have two people. One in the car working the starter and one under the hood with the cables. The person working the cables only connects when you're ready to hit the starter and disconnects the second the engine fires up. Your six volt starter will spin like crazy on 12 volts so starting usually only takes a few seconds.

Thanks, One of those things I wanted to know before I was in that situation.

I have done it many times. as well. I did blow up a 6 volt battery on a tractor while jumping with 12 volts. I do not remember the exact circumstances. It can happen. Two man, as Rusty said. Wear eye protection. Protect your Kids.

Ha Ha, 35 Mike, you brought back a memory. Years ago we were jumping a junk 6 volt battery in an old tractor. I looked at the battery and told the old guy that owned it, wow that battery is bubbling and boiling like crazy. He said Oh, that is good that means it is charging. About a minute later the battery blew up! Don't leave a 12 volt battery hooked up to a 6 volt battery any longer than it takes to start the engine and if it doesn't start disconnect the cables.
