Based on the original and properly restored 30’s Chevy’s pickups I have seen the pine boards were treated with a black stain. The retaining strips were painted with black enamel.

The wood and the metal strips were painted as a unit. The enamel soaked ito the wood giving it less gloss,

If the boards are pine I think I'd use heart pine rather than off the shelf white pine 1x6s. Heart pine will last much longer.

Thanks for the clarification Gene.
I knew that the wood was never given any type of finish topcoat or sealer. I did not realize that it was just the black enamel that soaked into the boards.
