My 32’ Olds has the same windshield frame as the 31-32 chevy, pontiac, and Buick 50 series convertible coupes have. Our options for side mounted rear view mirrors are those lousy spare tire mounted ones and the reproduction ones are useless as most are too low and they end up too far forward getting obscured by the windshield post. I thought about making a mirror mount that would fasten to the windshield pivot knob that could easily be put on or taken off especially for those who show.
Yesterday I machined a piece of 1” aluminum to fit over the pivot stud and to interlock with the stops built into the windshield framing. This interlocking prevents the mount from moving at all and loosening up. Once I was done machining the block, a walk across my yard to my neighbors to get it polished then it was done. I had purchased a pair of mirrors off of eBay that included the clips and set screws for mounting to a door edge. Removing the clip base revealed a serrated end on the mirror arm which “bites” into the aluminum mount when the socket head bolt is tightened. The mirrors I purchased are true surface ones so the field of view is narrower than if they were convex. I am going to experiment with a convex one on the passenger side with a true surface one on the drivers side. I still need to make the drivers side up and I’m thinking of having my machine shop write a CNC program up for his machine to make a run of pairs. I’ll purchase the mirrors then offer them for sale if there’s enough interest.

Ted,
That is a great idea and solution for a real problem. Seeing behind our older cars in modern traffic is a safety issue.

I now have multiple sets of mirrors made up and available to purchase. As most know, these are hand made by me on my vertical mill then hand polished by Brass from the Past. They are not polished on the backside that can’t be see and there might be some tooling marks or imperfections but in no way interfere with the attachment or function. The mirrors are polished stainless steel with the drivers side a conventional mirror and the passenger side a convex mirror. These are easy on and easy off, guaranteed to fit the 31-32 GM cabriolet and convertible coupes with folding windshield. If for any reason one doesn’t fit well because of a too heavy rechrome on the windshield post, I will machine it to fit your post if sent back to me. The price is $239 including shipping in the Continental US. Those of you from out of country, request a shipping quote. Please note, these are made up but polished at time of sale so allow a couple days from payment received to shipping. PayPal is accepted.

Below are pictures of the recent batch made.

I’m bringing a few sets to the AACA grand National in Virginia, 5/19-21. if anyone is interested look for the 32’ Olds convertible roadster on the show grounds. I’ll be the guy with my left arm in a sling! I understand these also fit the phaeton models also. They really improve the rear field of view.
