Hello All-

My kids just gave me a 1941 Special Deluxe coupe.

It is in great shape-except-

1. Steering is VERY vague-new steering box?
2. Someone has put an alternator and 12V starting system, but I need rewiring
so the lights, heater motor, etc. will work. Ideas?

Thanks and I look forward to being in this group.

Hey there Jonathan

Welcome to THE place for owners of old Chevrolets!
Forty ones, and especially Special Deluxe coupes are pretty cars and I'm sure Charlie will be here shortly to affirm that.
In the mean time...
Do you need to rewire due to the condition of the wiring? Or to make the accessories and gauges work with 12 volts?
Either way, I'd seriously consider converting back to 6 volts.
I find the 6 volt system to be just as effective and reliable as 12, and everything in the car works with 6 volts without all the conversion issues.
And it brings back the originality too! :-)

PS
Good generators and regulators and good heavy battery cables aren't too hard to find either.
Also, chances are you still have a 6 volt starter, but you would need to confirm that.

I second what Stovbit says about going back to 6 volts. My 1950 has always been 6 volts and has been very reliable.
Want to have some modern electronics with you when you tour? You can run anything that uses a USB cord for power in your 6 volt Chevrolet by buying a USB to cigarette lighter plug in. Why does that work? Well the power that a USB cord provides is 5 volts even when plugged into a 6 volt Chevrolet. I have traveled thousand of miles with a Garmin GPS map device plugged into my 1950. Charge your iPhone too.
