Hello Everyone,
I am in the process of fixing a few minor leaks, I am currently working on the oil pan, but I think the timing cover seal may be weeping.
My engine is a 216 cu in 6 cylinder. Would anyone have a harmonic balancer puller that I could borrow and or rent ??

Unless the later 216 had a "oil seal" they slinger was the main oil keeper, the cork around the harmonic balancer wasnt much more than a dust retardant. Tony

My 216 has a proper rubber seal in front. A universal puller will work fine. Just make sure you're pushing against the crank. If your balancer has hand crank lugs you'll need to put something in the hole between the lugs to push against with the puller. I use a 1/2" drive 9/16" socket.

The 1937 216 was the first year for a timing cover seal. It was a metal encased leather. The later rubber seal eplaced it. A 1937 also has a slinger which was discontinued in mid 1938.

Chev Nut, Thank you for the offer, once I get the timing cover off I'll have a better idea of its condition. After a conversation with m006840, I have removed the harmonic balancer and it has a repair sleeve already installed and a later rubber seal. The leak actually appears to be the lower part of the timing cover. I had planned to remove the oil pan to replace the gasket, so I'll be able to get at the inside screws that hold the bottom of the cover tight. I read somewhere that there is a modification to move the 2 lower screws to the outside. is that true, or am I dreaming ??

Another place they can leak at the front is between the front main bearing cap and the front mounting plate. The gasket you will find there is the big gasket behind the front mounting plate and main bearing cap. What they did was remove the cap and remains of the gasket and used Permatex between the cap and the plate.

If I remember correctly there was some limitation or concern with the conversion. It has something to do with removing the front main bearing cap to adjust the bearing clearance.
Sorry for the brain fade!
