Today I removed the wiring harness from my car . When I opened up a fuse holder to see what size fuse was in it i found a length of what looks like coat hanger-NO FUSE. I have a new harness ordered as this one was way past it's useful life and I can't believe in the 6 years I drove this car I never had a problem.

never know what you will find :) i have heard of bolts being used, only drawback is the next weakest link will fail since the fuse has been bypassed :o

glad you did not have any issues :) like duct tape clothes hangers have many uses, well the metals ones anywho

On my ”˜37 Master coupe Uncle Jimmy had installed a very high amperage fuse. It was a 1” long piece of 1/4-20 threaded screw. It did fit the fuse holder very well.

They all "work" until there is a short - then the wiring acts like a fuse. flush

I knew a guy that blew a fuse at night and all he had was a 22 rifle bullet, fortunately he was not injured but it went off and ruined the fuse holder on the back of the light switch!

I have seen 4" nails in cars and houses and the inner foil wrapping from a cigarette packet wrapped around the old fuse.

Years ago I was having problems with a (non-GM) car constantly blowing the dash lights/tail lights circuit fuse. After replacing blown fuses several times I became so fed up I stuffed the fuse holder area with wadded tinfoil, and didn't care if I burnt the car up. When I touched the brake pedal smoke started pouring out the top of the steering column. I was happy - I'd finally found the problem. A new directional signal unit went in and the car rolled up another 70000 miles trouble-free!!

Probably not the best trouble shooting procedure.

Only the bad wires let the smoke out

Be sure to replace that coat hanger wire with the proper gauge of new coat hanger wire. Hey, if it aint broke, don't fix it.

I was thinking that seeing I have a new complete wiring harness from Rhode Island Wiring I probably should use a new fuse.

With all new wiring and following the instructions it is not likely to let out more smoke. With the rest of the wiring new a new fuse seems appropriate.

Smoke testing is good for one time diagnostic testing. But the secret is to keep the smoke inside the wire.
