Hello, I’m planning on swapping out the 171cid for a 6 cylinder in my 1928 roadster. What I6s will directly drop in for a 28? Will a 216 or 235 bolt up to the frame without mods? I found a 1941 216cid

I'm not positive on the car side of things. I know for 28 trucks however that you wouldn't be able to put an I-6 in place of a 4cyl w/o modifying at least the fire wall for the longer engine. I think the 28 cars and trucks use the same firewall and cowl. Someone with more wisdom will chime in I'm sure.

Yes I heard that 28s were made longer than 27s due to the anticipation of the 194 I6 and that the last few months of 28 production they actually installed I6s. But this has all been read on the web..

There will be extensive modifications to fit a later six cylinder into a '28. The closest requiring the least work would be either 1929 or 1930. They have similar transmissions as how they mount to the engine.

The hood was lengthened and radiator moved forward but the front cross member widened to support the front of the engine. Used a shroud to allow good cooling.

Might as well put in a V-6 with modern transmission and open drive shaft rear end.

Thanks Chipper! I guess a 2 generation I6 might not be the easiest or worthwhile upgrade then. Back to the drawing board.

What was the correct color of the 1929 engine? It looks awfully close to a 216.

Dark Blue Gray is correct color for 1929 through 1952 all six cylinders. Some car and truck engines after that.
