Gauge reads 1/2 full when full and does go towards empty but is not empty. New sending unit installed any ideas what next step is to get it to read correctly?

If you have a multimeter check your sending unit. Put the meter on ohms and set it to 200. Put the red lead on the lug the wire connects to and the black lead touching the housing. Move the float lever through it's range of movement. It should show ~0 in the empty position and ~30 in the full position and show a smooth transition between the two readings.

I am assuming that you have installed an aftermarket or retrofit fuel sender.

Tiny is correct that the first step is to confirm that it is a 0 to 30 ohm unit.

My first guess is that it is a 0 to 60 ohm sender.

Mt second guess is that the float arm needs adjusted to cover the full range of fuel level in the tank.

These are common issues with aftermarket or replacement units. They are not reproductions of the original.

Fixed gauge by cleaning it,replaced sending unit, and making a better ground. Gauge works like brand new.
