A radio was almost always an option in the 50s and 60s. If one didn't order a radio (which was usually dealer-installed) the vehicle had a plate over the hole. Those plates are today frequently referred as "radio delete" plate but that's incorrect because the radio wasn't "deleted" it just wasn't there unless one specified a radio

What is the proper name for those original plates, please

I agree the word delete is incorrect, In the dealership we called them dummy plates or blank-off plates, Never heard an official name.

Sometimes "cover", "panel", "plate". Maybe more

Chevrolet called it a "plate" radio opening cover.
I have one for a 1956,and or a 1957 Bel Air and a 1950 that was removed from my 1950 many years ago.
