Why does it turn by itself when not running?????....what can I do to stop it....

Un-stick the cutout points in your voltage regulator.

I am interested in how you discovered this situation. I did not realize that the generator had enough power to turn over the engine when it was run as an electric motor.
I agree that the cutout points in the regulator are not opening like they should when the output voltage from the generator drops.

That is what I was wondering, must have had the fan belt off.

Three different voltage regulators were used in 1952 with the various three generators. The correct regulator must be used depending on the number of the generator.

Yes......The fan belt is new but may have worked loose over the last few days...I still did not know or have ever seen a generator turn by itself.

That reminds me to check the reading on the ammeter when you shut off the engine of a Chevy. Anything toward discharge may be stuck regulator or cut-out points.

TY...Chipper...I will check in the morning....I noticed it all the way over on charge and did not think of that...I thought it was just charging...

The generator is a motor. It will turn if enough juice is going to it on wrong posts. Juice and grounded. Are you sure you have it wired correctly? Best, Charlie

I assume that you are disconnecting the battery when you are not troubleshooting this. Otherwise you will at a minimum run the battery down or potentially create an electrical fire.

That used to be one of the shade tree mechanic tests we would use. If it wasn't charging put voltage to the generator. If it spun the problem was probably in the regulator.
