Hi i had water pump bushs and stainless steel shaft made up.after oiling it every time the truck was driven the outer bush is now badly worn after just 600 miles.im told that a lot of people who make there own water pump bushes have them fail after low milage.a old timer here tells me the origonal outer bush was a sintered type , i think thats what thay are called, like the spigot bush in the back of the crankshaft .any one know if the water pump kits made for 1927 chev 4 use this type of bush,as i dont want to waste $300.00 bucks buying the same useless bronze bush. The front bush pictured in the adds. dosnt look like the origonal part ? Thanks

Some bronze bushings and stainless shafts are not compatible. I had the same problem many years ago with a bronze bushing and stainless shaft that came in a kit. With oiling it only lasted ~50 miles. I replaced the supplied bronze bushing with a sintered metal (Oilite brand) and have had no more trouble. I understand even polishing the stainless shaft with common bronze bushings have problems.

I had the same problem as Chipper using a bronze bushing and stainless shaft. It lasted less than 100 miles so I thought I had erred in assembly. I took it to a machine shop and they made up a new sintered bushing and a shaft from "drill rod stock" . I ran it for five or more years with no problems.

If you bought a kit tell the supplier about the shortage, you have paid for it.

I got my sintered bush to day but theres a problem.the water pump shaft size isnt 5/8 it is more like 39/64 arrrrrrrr so i ether go with the suplyed use less bush or use this slightly loose fitting sintered bush with a flange for end float.the bush suplyed with the kit has no outer flange at all. nothings simple!!! anyone know if you can machine a sintered bush if i get one with a smaller centre with out stuffing it up?

Sintered bushings can be machined. It takes some special care as they tend to smear. If that happens the flow of oil is restricted. As far as I know machining a smaller ID bushing is the only good solution to long water pump life.

I found one, a flanged sintered bush to fit with a inside diameter of 39/64 branded sinterlite,so thay do exist. Why the water pump kits dont just go to 5/8 ? thay would just need to supply a pully with a machined out 5/8 centre

The shafts I mentioned in my above post were made from 5/8" stock. The ends were turned to fit the impeller and pulleys. As Chipper mentioned the bushings can be machined and mine were machined to fit the new 5/8" shafts.
