is a 327ci a good choice engine for street racing?? auto

I have an idea that the street racing he is refering to is not the street drag racing we (I) used to do.Perhaps he will explain to us old timers what he means.

let me rephrase myself,would the engine be a good power maker. it featured a 4 inch bore 3.25 stroke which as i read will make rpm faster than a 350,4 inch bore 3.50 stroke.all i want is engine spec not a lecture please thanks

locok26,I always felt that the 350 was little improvement over a 327.It may have been better for an automatic trans. because of a little more low end torque But as a choice for just a fun type driver it seemed more flexible.They are also getting rare now.

Sorry locok 26 if my mis-understanding of the term "Street Racing" offended you but that is what you said. You just happened to have made your initial posting on the morning of Saturday the 31st. The previous evening, 15 miles from my front door step in the downtown business district of Pontiac, Michigan, a 26 year old Foriegn National with a poor driving record, nailed the throttle on his late model Camaro as a 20 year old couple were walking on a 8 foot wide sidewalk having just left a local teen night club. He lost it and pinned the two against the granite facing of a local office building. The girl is now a double amputee missing both legs and her date is in critical condition with closed head injuries. And the driver, his lawyer is openly complaining about the 10 million dollar bond the judge placed on his client stating that his client has a wife and two small children at home that need his care. Strange that a married man is cruising a teen night club in his Camaro while his wife and two kids are at home.

This same week, a young adult male in Detroit was given 15 to 20 years for killing one and injuring serveral others during a "Street Racing" event that took last fall. Eight Mile road divides Detroit and several cities to the north. Two darkened police cars with two officers each were parked on the north side of Eight Mile, playing music over their loud speakers and watching as the event took place on the south side of Eight Mile. The cops were all reprimanded. Their defence, "It wasn't our district".

Sorry folks, Road Racing is still dumb. I did it 49 years ago in my then new 53 Chev. I look back and say, "that was really dumb".

If the moderator(s) feel I'm too caustic on the term, "Road Racing", then delete this posting.

I did phrase that wrong and meant no offense.The only racing that i know of here is thursday night test and tune at the local motorsports park.I just wanted some advice or tips on what I can try to compete with the guys down there because a 305 just doesn't do it.I came across a 327 engine from a coworker and he gave it to me.It had two collapsed pistons and had not run in a few years,it came with a steel crank and a good set of rods.I took it to a local machine shop and had it bored to .030 turns out the block was still standard bore so thats a plus that it had never been machined before.the crank was turned 10/10 and the rods were checked.I bought a set of 186 casting 1970 chevy heads already worked. they have 2.02I 1.60E valves,.550 rated springs,screw-in studs and push rod guide plates.Any more suggestions for what I need to finish this project? mind you im on a limited budget so between 800+1000 flush dollars is what i can afford to spend right know. chev nut said something about automatic trans for this style engine maybe not as good as 350??I have a 350 trans that i would like to use with this application.By the way all this is going into an 82 camaro z-28 and it has a 373 rear gear ratio anything else you need please ask

With the light Camaro and 3.73 rear end it will have enough gearing to get it up in RPM for good power.Just don't get to radical with the camshaft because that can kill off the bottom end.Basicly you will have the equivelent of a 300 HP 327 used from 1962-65.They used a stock hyd. lifter cam.

Those 2.02 intake valves will slow your low speed acceleration [they only work above 5000 rpm give or take a few rpms] choose your cam very carefully and use a high stall convertor with your 350 turbo and it should give you good power. A dual plane intake with a Holly 650 carb and headers should get you in the running.

You will be running with 350,s and 383,s I would say the 327 will not do the job with $800 to spend see what the top guns are running then make a choice on what to do..doc

I guess it all comes down to how much money you have to spend or if your just out to have fun.With the investment you have already made I think your on the right track.

thanks to all I think I will save up another month or two maybe make this a winter project, hopefully I will be kicking but by spring what about trying to build a roller assembly I hoped to build to 300hp at the rear wheel,naturally aspirated, maybe shoot for forged pistons and a 100 or 150 shot of nitrous. What would I need to make at the flywheel to achieve my goal without the nitrous?? ok maybe a guestimate

Keep in mind with nitrous that you only have two bolt mains and too much boost will push the bottom end out on the pavement. curse

would i notice a performance difference with a roller cam setup maybe a geardrive would i need to go to the point of an electric fan what choices do i have besides what is listed??? devil

i think it would be alright. but i would sell it and by a 350 crate. then it depends on what you have to put it in flush
