I have been driving my semi restored 54 convert the last couple of years of which I converted to 12 volts but running the stock 6 volt starter, approximately what life expectancy can i hope for the starter.I see they now have available a 12 volt starter but it is expensive, should I go for it or leave things be,any opinions? thanks.

As long as you do nor grind the starter for extended periods of time causing it to overheat will will last for many years......if it was in good condition to began with.

30 years ago I did the same thing on a tractor, the last time I saw the tractor it was still working fine. It turned faster on the starter than when it was idling.

My 54 wagon....60,000 miles...Lots of stops and starts on a 6 to12 volts system..never a problem...loved the fast spin since 1998.

Yep, as others said... 6volt starter on 12volts is fine. If you have to crank for more than a few seconds, you have trouble somewhere else.
