In anticipation of receiving my new valve guides from Bob Marx, I started to press out the old guides. I'm using a 10-ton press I built many years ago. A couple of guides came out clean, but a couple were very stubborn and when they did come out, the guides and bores in the head showed evidence of severe galling. I've never had this happen before. Is this something common in early '30's heads? I've stopped doing any more until I have some info.

Thanks. Tom

My suggestion would be to heat up the iron head near the guides. This will cause the iron casting to expand. The guides are probably rusted in.
