getting the car ready to drive.

I have dropped the oil pan to clean out the pudding and will be removing the valve cover to adjust valves soon.

does the block behind the side panel (over the pushrods &c) accumulate crud that must be cleaned out?

will gladly remove and clean if needed but would not want to spend the time if it generally stays clean back there.

I will be running detergent oil if that matters....

Chris, my 1936 Standard did not have build up under the side push rod cover. Bent push rods was my problem. The build up for me was in the oil pan and in the corners of the block. Use a light to look up inside the block for sludge build up in the corners. Check the oil pump screen to make sure it is not blocked with build up. Inside the oil pan check the oil passages for blockage.

The push rod compartment usually is full of sludge. This is due to moisture forming on the sheet metal side cover.
It will be safer to clean that area while the pan is off due to sludge dropping into the pan.

The more you look the more you will find. Thats what happens when I go see my doctor. I think "pudding" is a necessary nutrient in these old cars. My 35 was clean in there too when I had to have the head serviced. Good luck doctor!
I use detergent oil too which suspends any particles in the oil instead of letting it drop to the pudding pan for the next oil change. So little miles each season, I just change it often.

Yes, You will have to clean the side pan area, too. They get so much gunk in there they plug the return oil holes to the pan.

Additionally while you are in there, cleaning on top of the head will allow oil to drain into the pan properly. Mine had so much gunk on top of the head that the oil was forced past the valve cover gasket and down the outside of the engine.

FOLLOWUP-

the block inside the valve cover and the side pushrod cover was very clean but I'm glad I confirmed that in the side cover and will have fresh gaskets all around........
