Was the original material used on the roadster seats some sort of vinyl, leather, or a cloth material?

The material on mine is cloth backed light brown vinyl, I know it is not from 1933, but i want to replace it with whatever is 'correct", as there are couple small tears in the sides of the bottom seat.

Thanks,
Doug

The Engineering manual says imitation leather.

What would be an available fabric to use to replace the original imitation leather that would pass judging standards?

The original was called “Spanish Grain Leather” and was a sort of Olive Drab background with a range of black, tan, and orangish grain lines pressed into this imitation leather. Nobody reproduces it any longer but there are a couple of guys who have several rolls tucked away and wont let them go. Ive tried.

From a judging standpoint Ive been told to stick with a vinyl in a “period color” and you will be “fine”. My 33 phaeton is no where near jusging so I have yet to see how it all turns out.

From the looks of the pictures, this is the correct material for a 33 roadster / phaeton. As Jeff said it's called "Tan Spanish Grain" and is a vinyl (Naugahyde). There are some of use diehard open car guys that have had this material made again. You can contact me for more information.

While I am not doing a 33 I am getting closer to doing the seat in my 38 and suspect it used the same material. What remained of the old material had what looked like a clothe backing similar to modern vinyl. Is this possible or had my seat been redone before I started?

Tony, I can't answer your question, but know the "Tan Spanish Grain" was not used past 35. It might have been a different color. Also cabriolets in 31/32/34 were leather.
