Does anyone have a rebuilt fuel pump for my 35 standard 207 engine? Part number? As a winter project I replaced my fuel lines. It came out really nice. Except now I cannot get her started. A half can of starting fluid and I filled the bowls via the vent tube several times. She starts right up and dies. I have always had a hard time starting if the engine sits for more than two weeks but she always starts.

You might have a stuck needle in the carb. Have you checked for flow by disconnecting the line to the carb and cranking it over with the line in a container to catch gas if it is pumping?

No, the car is in an attached garage. I will ask a friend to come over to lend a pair of hands. I would still like to have a spare pump laying around.
There is snow on the ground. And wifey is home. The fumes will
get me a woopin.

Put a hose on it and a mason jar with a hole poked in the top for the hose to go through. Fumes should be very low. Also open door and put a box fan to ventilate.

"Does anyone have a rebuilt fuel pump for my 35 standard 207 engine?"

Good morning Wisebri.

I may have a rebuildable fuel pump. Shall I look? I carry a spare in my '36 pickup and on one occasion I was very glad I had it.

You may be interested to know that a 1935-40 Ford fuel pump diaphragm fits your fuel pump. It is inexpensively available from Ford part suppliers and they don't make you buy a whole "kit" to get it.

Just tried it. Thanks. The fuel is dribbling. It's not a strong burst. Is the part #1523421?

Yes, wisebri24. The 1929-1942 parts book lists 1523421 for all 1935 and 1936 models.

Two other numbers that might help the search. The AC type or short number is 421, this is the number the parts houses of the day would know and is the last three of the above number. The early long number for that pump is 1521812.

Aren't you looking for a pump? I don't have any that would work but if I was looking I would use the number 421 or your long number and call these folks http://www.then-now-auto.com/

I don’t trust ebay for this. I looked and I see different fuel pumps with same part number.

My pump doesn’t say “AC” so I don’t know what I have. This forum doesn’t accept my photo’s.

The ebay search does bring up pumps for a 421 Pontiac, but check these out, is this what your pump looks like?

Got a answer machine at the rebuilder guy. Mars Auto Parts just called me back. He supposedly found one in stock for $150. I will go there in the AM. to see.
Thank you all for your help!

Rebuilding one of these is super simple. I would guess that either the diaphragm is old hard cracked and nasty, or you have little bit of crud stuck in the inlet check valve on the pump. I would probably replace the diaphragm as matter of principle if you don't know its age.

Ok. Thanks. I can buy the 35-40 Ford diaphram per Ray and see if it fits.

Joe, I've lost your email address and the geniuses who run this forum only allow VCCA members to post photos here. So I would have to pay for the privilege of posting that. I'd be glad to email you a photo of the Ford diaphragm.

I removed the fuel pump. Not much pressure when I hold my finger over the inlet. I suspect there wouldn't be that much with a 2-3 lb. system. The gasket has a split in it and appears to have the same birthday as me. Not one drop of fuel fell when I disconnected the line to the carb. Possible air leak.???
As for the diaphram, no visible damage and it looks like a leather type material. I don't see how the diaphram comes off because the metal piece on top of it is rivited. Is it locked in from under where the spring is?

I am certainly not an expert, but if it is riveted togtehr, it is most likely a much later aftermarket pump.

PS: when the motor in on TDC #1, the pump is easiest to reinstall as the cam lobe is on its low point WRT the lever arm.

You say you replaced the fuel lines.

Did you try pulling a vacuum (you can suck with a rubber hose attached to the line), on the line? An unprimed line will take forever to get fuel to the pump.

Thanks, I will turn the motor to tdc. As stupid as this sounds, I have two old squirt type ketchup/mustard bottles that restaurants used. I use one to squirt the 600W gear oil into my tranny. The squirter is cut off for thick oil. The other I use for fuel as I can squirt fuel down the line until it's full. Call me crazy, I'd rather squirt than suck. (yes I went there).
I went to Mars Auto this AM with the old pump not optimistic they had stock on the exact same pump and ready to inquire about the 35-40 Ford diaphram and the rivit dilema. Well it was a rebuilt AC pump with a one year warrantee. Needless to say I brought it home with me. I got him down to $125. with my old one for a core. Still expensive but path of least resistance.

If it was not rebuilt recently with an alcohol resistant diaphragm, you will probably need that warranty. I posted a reply to your Parts Wanted ad. The offer is still good if you would like to have a spare.
