Looking for help decoding the serial number on a 1938 chevy master 216 engine. Serial # stamped on the block by the distributor is I60879I . thanks for any help.

Could your engine serial number be 1608791 instead of I60879I? At any rate, your engine is a 1938.

1938 engine numbers ranged from 1187822-1915446 so it is a 1938 engine.
Chevrolet used an I rather tha a ! when stamping engine numbers.
