Seeing as there were no rubber mounts for the engine and it was bolted hard to the chassis there would be no need for an earth strap. My "28" doesn't have one.

Hi guys, You gotta have an "earth strap" as you are calling it. The + battery cable goes from the + battery post to the connection on the starter. The - strap/cable goes from the - post on the battery to a bolt on the transmission. Even though the engine is mounted directly to the frame, you must complete the continuity back to the battery - post.

I have 27 and two 28's and the ground strap from the battery attaches directly to the frame just next to the battery.

Hi Hozz,

The electrical diagram in the Owner's Manual shows, and states, that the ground strap is bolted to the frame, however as a practical matter the circuit to the starter is shorter if connected to the transmission. If connected to the frame, all the accessories will work correctly, however the circuit for the starter (a very important circuit) must go through three questionable contacts (the three motor attaching points). It is very common that all three mounting bolts are loose (the reason for the castle nuts and key) in addition to being covered with oil.

Yet another great bit of information. I too was told that the ground should go to the transmission, but I was only told that it was a better ground. This makes perfect sense the way that Ray has explained it.
I'm guessing that it doesn't really matter where on the transmission I connect, but assuming that it would be one of the top facing bolts, is that correct?

Thanks again to Ray, I'm continually drudging up 10+ year old answers to my daily questions.
