My uncles 56 lower trunk latch broke. He bought an aftermarket replacement (I know!). It looks correct. We spent 1-1/2 hours to get it to latch. When I finally got it to latch the lid was cockeyed. The lid was aligned with the old latch. It doesn't seem to reach the upper part so it had to be slammed hard to latch. I tried shimming it. No luck. Anyone else been through this? HELP!!!

Put someone knowledgeable in the trunk with a flashlight. Maybe he could see what the problem is. I did mine by trying over and over until I got it.

Thanks for the reply. I was the idiot in the trunk with the flashlight. We got it lined up but the lid was not reaching the latch. I tried shimming the latch. Not only did it look like crap, we had to slam the lid and the lid was not lined up with the quarter panels. I know it's a hassle.
I posted this to see if it's a common problem hoping for the right combination.

Sounds like you may have to loosen the bolts on the hinges to gain some extra movement.
