Hello,
My 1928 fuel tank gauge is on the top of the rear tank and in need of removal and restoration, the glass is all gummed up. How do I remove the the fuel gauge? Is it threaded and Does it unscrew? My guess is that it has never been apart since it was made in 1928.
What is the best way to remove without damaging the gauge or tank?

The retainer unscrews. Best to use a strap wrench or protective pad between large arc-joint pliers and the retainer to keep from messing up the milled edge.

In addition to what Chipper says, I recommend that you go with some penetrating oil, WD-40, or the like and soak the cap daily for several days before you try to remove it. I've spent WEEKS getting one of these off. As Chipper said a rubber strap wrench like you use on an oil filter is the way to go. Some gentle heat with a heat gun to soften the gummy buildup is also a good idea. Obviously, no flame or high heat in view of the gasoline.
