ON the 55 Chevy, has anyone taken the speedometer head apart? If so is there any parts that can be replaced or can I just clean and lub the head and re assemble?

Hi Dick,

It is kinda an iffy situation. If it is only acting up as a result of hardened lubrication, then cleaning may restore the unit to proper operation. However, if the pivot bearings the drum operates in are so worn that the drum touches the rotating magnet, then you are looking for either professional repair or another speedometer.

Dick,
I agree with Ray.To reassemble the speedo can be pretty tricky. After trying this on three 55 speedos to no avail I carried it to a speedometer shop and they had to clean and re-bush the drum in order to repair the speedo. I have since had more problems with other speedometers and I leave up to the pro's. The last 55 I had repaired was $100.00 and it has always cured my problem.

Any local speedo shop that is near you can do the job. Some shops are listed in Hemmings Motor News as well. laugh laugh laugh

Thanks JYD, I don't think we have any local shops here; I would have to sent it off to someone.

Amazing! There are several very small towns near me that have speedo shops. Try the yellow pages to see if you do have a speedo shop near you. If Florida doesn't have one, then it sure ain't worth living there! ha ha! laugh laugh laugh wink

JYD, it sounds like Floridey is a good place to visit (that one day a year) but no place to live, I wonder what day it will be in 2005? They probably done already had it,......... so never mind.

Thanks for the information John.

JYD, All of us who are here thank you, LOL.

With over 2,000 people a week moving here I think it might be time to start thinking about slowing down the migration...LOL

All of my azaleas starting blooming last week (beautiful) but I had to mow my yard last week…no caribou to eat the grass for me…by the way has your snow started to melt yet??
