Have you considered collecting parts and pieces and doing your own?

I agree,

Try to do it your self, not that difficult, very satisfying, and keeps the dollars in your pocket.

Cheers

I have documented my 45 years with a 1928 Chev Tourer, from 1973 to 2018, and regulary add other items that I hope are of interest to others. Your comments are most welcome. The story of the Red Chev can be viewed at http://my28chev.blogspot.com/

There is a fellow who comes to the Portland Swap in April meet who makes replacement wood for the 28 spiders. I think he wanted $175. They look really nice and have all the finger notches.

I have one steering wheel that measures 16 3/4" across with good rim. I also have one rim that measures 17 1/4" that is complete but needs to be re-glued. Let me know if you are interested and I will send some pictures.

Genem,

I agree with the masses - not hard to re-glue a steering wheel if you have all of the sections.

1) I started by screwing in the wood pieces onto the steering wheel frame

2) I found it was best to dry fit the remaining pieces first to make sure you have the best fit

3) Then using good wood glue (like gorilla glue) you glue up the splines and match up the pieces

4) I then used bungee cords around the wood section (front to back side on each section that is not screwed). Uline and most office supply stores sell large rubber bands (1" wide x 7") that can also apply even pressure while drying

5) It is best to wipe up any excess glue with a slightly damped cloth while still wet

6) After drying, I found it was very easy to sand the wood and make any repairs with wood filler while still held in place on the steering wheel frame

7) Once glued, repaired and sanded you can decide what type of stain, oil or a la natural, I used a light colored stain to give the wood a light blonde (maple) color before I used a polyurethane clear coat.

I restored my wheel 20 years ago and has not failed me yet

All good advice. There's nothing quite like whipping through corners in a 28 Chev and suddenly you are holding kindling in your hands. Toss it in the back seat and grab the wheel spokes. Vintage motoring at its most exciting.

Everyone stains their wood, but it is my understanding that they were painted brown (Ugly) by Chevy, so if you want original, Brown. Spiders were also covered by a foam type sleeve (never seen an original or a repro on the sleeve). Both my 28s are stained but other than that are restored originals (1 with 162 original miles). It had 18 original miles when first purchased. Go to www.theforgottenchevy.com to see it.

Hope this is useful in some regards

The 28 steering wheel is brown, 17", and has rubber grips on each spider. The wheel is made of walnut.

Remindes me of my grandpaw's axe that I have and it is completely original. Well, the handle has been replaced three times and I think the head was replaced twice.
