Does anyone know if the front brake drums and hub are sealed together as a single unit on a 1940 chevy sedan? The drums I have were painted and not sure if the paint will not allow me to separate without heating/pressure. To check the brake pads, I have to pull the front bearings to remove the hub/drum.

Thanks

The factory riveted the drum and hub together. Years ago when the drum or hub was replaced they would bolt them together. Finally in 1960 they got smart and eleminated the rivets as the wheel struds do the job very well.
It is necessary to undo the wheel bearings to remove the hub and drum when they are riveted together.

Just a suggestion to you 40original. If you are a VCCA member, you just hit the jackpot. One of the most dedicated and knowledgeable 1940 Chevy owner lives in Phoenix. He is one of the Technical Advisors in the VCCA.
If you are not a member of the VCCA, consider joining us. It costs $40/year and you get one of the greatest mostly color Chevrolet magazines which we call the Generator & Distributor = G&D.

I have owned my 1940 Chevy coupe now for 47 years now.

When I replaced the front drums on my '47, I drilled out the rivets and had to bring them to a shop that had a BIG press to get them pressed out. If you want to try it yourself,
make sure you support the drum from the inside just clear of the hub.
