I'd like to hear from owners of unrestored '61 to '64 Impala Sport Coupes and convertibles to ask questions about the cardboard panel installed behind the rear seat back. (viewed from inside the trunk)
I'd like to know if the panel has holes punched in the center or not and if the car originally came with a rear seat speaker. I'd also like to know if the panel has trunk spatter paint on it or not.
Please let me know the year, model and assembly plant. This is for an ongoing research project.

Thanks
Verne patriot

My 62 has been in the family since 1970, and the trunk has not been touched. It has the holes and had no rear seat speaker and is painted with spatter paint, as well as the body harness. My two door sedan was painted also.

Thinking about how the body was built, the panel would have to be painted. The paint process would have been complete prior to interior any installation, and the panel is installed over the body harness, and my harness is covered with spatter paint. One would think that the panel prevents the spatter paint from entering the cabin. If the cardboard was not painted then how come the vertical supports in the trunk are painted, and I had never seen any overspray of spatter paint in the cabin area.

The car is 07A Tarrytown. I had taken photos if you are interested

John,
I have data that shows that some plants installed that cardboard panel before AND after spatter trunk paint. It's just a plant procedure deviation that I'm trying to nail down. I'm also trying to nail down whether the panel always had the holes on Sport Coupes or just the ones that came with a rear speaker.

Verne
I would be very interested in hi-res photos of it.
I'll bet the 2dr sedan doesn't have any holes in the panel though...

PM me your email I don't know if I still have it. I will have to dig for the photos on the sedan before I did it, I do know it was painted also. That too is a Tarrytown car 04B. I don't recall if the holes were there off the top of my head
I would say the holes were on all, don't forget I would say a majority of the radios and rear speakers was a dealer installed item. My car does have the holes an no rear speaker

Verne, I have owned two 62 Impala sport coupe models. Currently have one. Both had no rear speaker, and had the holes in the cardboard with no splatter paint and both had splatter paint trunks. I added rear speakers to both. Bob

Good evening all. I also have some question regarding 64 Impala SS. Many new discoveries were found on my car as it getting restored. It is believed my car was in fact a true 425 / 409. I wanted to compare some photos I acquired with someone that owns a 425 / 409 that came from the LA plant.
