There were 2 different ways to use the jack on a 1940 Chevy. One is the lug nut wrench. The other was a straight piece of solid pipe. I will check my notes, but I it is 9/16" diameter solid steel rod that is either 18 or 20 inches in length. Yes, the solid piece of steel rod was factory issued in 1940.

I am confused! In the above picture of the two jacks, you said the one on the right is a 1941 universal jack, and the other is a 1940 jack, right. But, the one on the right is in fact a 1940 standard jack as per Dave, right. Now, the one on the left is assumed a 1940 friction jack as sold by maybe the parts department, right? Now the one you thought was 1948, turns out to be a 1941 (not pictured) standard jack, right? The jack handle you are inquiring about is for the 1940 jack Dave made a drawing of on his web site, right. The one on the right in your picture. If so, I think the small drawing just to the right of the jack is just the "end view" of where to insert the round jack handle. I know there are a lot of "rights" in the above, but just want to get it right.

So's heres basicly what you got..I guess a 3/4 inch pipe or metal rod would do the trick??? I think the subjet of this thread should be changed to Chevy Bumper Jacks

How did you know I was in heavy search...I will score, but who knows when???I have 2 other early 40's Jacks On the right is a 41 universal the other is the Chevy 1940 unit I can now add the Chevy 1941 to the wall It looks like the jack on the left is not a 41 universal jack...Every thing is the same except where it hooks to the car...Are you confused yet

Oh wow, looks like you just threw a wrench, or ratchet, in Dave's drawing. I will never second guess your questions again. You can start part three or whatever any time. This is good stuff for the old and young alike. I have made contact with a '48 owner. He will check out his jack to see if it might be the original. Hope it is!

Bruce, the base of your friction jack, is it loose or fixed to the shaft?

Now, the one on the left is assumed a 1940 friction jack as sold by maybe the parts department My skepticism increases that is a 1940. Reason, looking at Dave's article of the '40 jack on his web site, the one pictured has the lift lip and the jack handle insert on the same side. Unless it swivels. I think I remember the fixed base is later also. How about it Dave?

I guess this confirms I have the 2 GM 1940 jacks Not to my old eyes. These two are quite different. I see that the lifting seat is very different. Also, do not see the up/down lever on the one in the drawing. Their is a difference in the shape of the two bodies. Waiting on Dave.

There is more than one version of the accessory friction jack. They made minor changes over the years. Also it was sold by all GM Divisions and also on the open market. It was around for over 10 years. If you notice the short lift tounge on the 1939-1940 jack it would never hook under the bottom of a 1946-1948 car. The short tounge was made to attach directly to the bumper bracket. So the rear brackets of a 1941 were covered it would not even work on a 1941.

Sorry about that Ray...Oviously there is massive amoumt of confussion with the correct jacks though out the years..Would it not be nice to have a collection of pictures of the correct GM jacks year by year??We struggled and are still struggling to verify any of these in question??How can a jack be judged"which I think Dick is preparing to do"if no one can even post a picture and it be "verified by those in the know" Every year at the reginal meet I look for correct turn signal switches for 47-48 and to date all I see is aftermarket????Visual documention needs to be collected..

Uncle Ed took 7 pictures of his jack but only 1 came through, so far. Comparing his jack to Dick's I can not pick up on any difference. I ask his to confirm the lower height measurement. Dick, if you see this will you see if you find a patent number on yours.

AS close as I can measure with the jack all the way down it is 6 1/4" from the floor to the lowest lifting point (where the jack lifts on the bumper).
