Hi Tom48! Since you are a VCCA member you can advertise in the G&D for free, so you might want to send in a "Parts Wanted" ad for the oil pan that you are looking for. Also, you can try posting the same under the "Parts Wanted" section of Chevy Chatter.

Good luck with your search!

The oil pan is the same from 1940-52-this should broaden your search. If the used pan is from a 235 the troughs will need to be raised slightly due to the shorter stroke on a 216.

Hey Chevygene ,, is the trough height the only difference ?
Reason being ,. I just found a NOS '48 235 short block and want to fit it up to my '40 when the 216 wears out . but I only have the 216 sump just now .
If it is just the trough height difference then I can modify a spare 216 sump to fit .
Thanks .
Tom48 sorry to sabotage your post with my question , but it just seemed too opertune .
Thanks .

There were different demensions for the 216 and 235 engines -The longer stroke of the 235 caused the rods to come closer to the pan troughs and the gauge had two positions.Without a gauge I would guess that the trough would need to be lowered 1/2 of the amount of the longer stroke-or 1/2 0f the 3/16" increase or3/32"..Some type of measuring device could be made for this adjustment if the proper dipper/target/trough heigth gauge can be found. This will prevent the rods from striking the troughs.

The 1940 head can't be used on that 235 engine so try to find a good 1949 to 1953 216 head (1950-53 prefered)-a 1941-48 could be used but has the small 10MM spark plugs.1950 and up has the larger 45 degree exhaust valves and 14 MM plugs.----1950 and up 235 head will not work-1940 head would actually fit but has domed combustion chambers due to the 1937-40 style domed pistons.Use of a 1940 head would give a very low compression ratio.A few other minor parts would also be needed such as valve lifters and push rods. :)

Thanks Chevgene , 3/32 is a small amount , maybe I can adjust something that amount .
When I got the NOS short block , I also got a sumpguage set , so when I get the oportunity to drag out a spare 216 sump , I will see just what bits measure up to what spec .
Also , last May , I found a NOS '40 216 bare cyl head .
SO .... the plan is to plane off the 0.187" that is required to make a 8.5:1 engine of the 235 dipper. That should help the engine run on todays gas.
I am looking forward to this project .

Update .
The Kent Moore oil trough pipe gauge # J-969-1A that I got looks like it is definately for the 216 engine .
However , I think I can use the 216 sump with a 3/32" shim and have the clearences OK , but I have to check the fit (screw aglinements) to the block first.
More later .

The 235 gauge is J-1646 -- from 1942-46 shop manual.

Terrific Chevgene , does anyone out there have the 235 gauge set that we can do some comparative measurements off ?

Tom48 did you notice that the ebay oil pan has no oil tubes in it ?
