I was at a National Show this weekend and was asked if the bolts {2} that mount the voltage regulator were correct. I have just the two regular 1/4 inch nut driver {hex head?} bolts to mount it. One of the judges asked if it should be a Philip, star type head. Does anyone know what is correct on that?
Thanks

Not sure on a '47. '57 was a clutch head screw. '47 might have also been a clutch head as there were other clutch head screws used particularly on the trucks.

I was the one who asked the question if there were clutch head screws used to hold the regulator to the fire wall. I know have seen them used in later years (53 and 54) and have not really noticed much use of hex head self taping fasteners on vehicles prior to 55. A photo in a shop manual might answer the question.

Rich, it did not come into play yesterday and was only an observation that was made in the Best of Show evaluation, but it might be a question for someone else at a future event. So getting some documentation if the question comes up again can only help you if they are correct, and if there not it is a simple fix you might want to look into.

I hope you had a safe trip home, I know getting on and off Long Island on a summer Sunday can be a huge task! Thanks for sharing your car with everyone and hope you and your wife had a good time. By the way it was pretty neat having the meet at a location where the original "mock-up" of the lunar module was located 45 years to the day that man landed on the moon

From the '42-'47 shop manual ????

I have several pictures of different '47-'48's and found only the hex head (no screwdriver slot) or the large pan head straight slot screws. For what it's worth.

My '48 has the straight slotted head screws. For what it's worth, the clutch head question has come up a couple times when my car has been judged, especially for the radiator baffle plate that slopes down from the top of the radiator to the grille. Some have said that it HAS to have clutch head screws there. My car has the slotted screws. I've parted out 3 or 4 '48s in Ohio and none of them had the clutch head screws anywhere except where the shifter attaches to the steering column up by the steering wheel. Maybe it was an assembly plant cut-in issue??

My Aerosedan always had slotted head screws there too. But I agree that different assembly plants and different times could produce different results in the type of screws used. We all know how GM and Chevrolet worked (and still does) to save a penny here and there.

Hi Dale,
Not to hijack, this is still about "screws".

Two other places according to all my pictures. '47 & '48. These are countersunk head with clutch slot. [Linked Image from pic100.picturetrail.com] wink

I have two more stories about screws under the hood I will share shortly.

If I were to be correct I would install one slotted, one phillips and one clutch head.

What size are used for the hex head bolts for the regulator?

We had a perfect trip home with little traffic issues. I have been asking and looking at other cars my age and seen a pan head screw as well as a nut driver head as I call them. No one seems to think they used a clutch head screw until the early 50's.It is a question that did interest me a lot as I like to pay attention to details on many things. My wife and I want to thank you and your wife for being such great hosts for dinner & brunch for the ladies. We had a great time. Are you going to the show in NJ in August?? We are going as Is Larry and Bob Emerson. Also going to Stowe Vermont on the eight for a pretty good show and swap meet. Thanks Again.

Glad the trip home went well. You got lucky! I am far from an expert on those cars, something jumped out at me about those bolts, that why I mentioned it, maybe they were the wrong size hex head? As I remember they looked like they were 3/8" maybe the originals are 7/16" ?

No I won't be heading to NJ, my wife and I have a season ticket plan for the Yankee's and we have 2 games that weekend and I traded games I had earlier in the year so I could have four tickets. We are going with some friends and made these plans before the season started. I have been down to that part of NJ several times over the years and had seen all of those sites already
Have a good time and safe trip
