The '55 I recently bought has a one wire alternator. The dash generator indicator light is no longer hooked up. Is there a way to wire this to work? There is one wire not hooked to anything labeled generator wire, and it is hanging there near the alternator. Thanks, Sid

Is that a Delco alternator? There may not be a charging light terminal on your alternator if it has an internal regulator. Some others have an "R" terminal for the indicator light.
If you have old Chevrolets, other old Chevrolets will find out where you live.

Thanks d2d2, there is an "R" terminal! I'll hook it up tomorrow and see what happens. Sid

It appears the gen light is disconnected in the instrument cluster, so I'll post pone further efforts until I have to remove the cluster. Thanks, Sid

This '55 has an alternator presumably to help power the aftermarket a/c. In making this car more correct I'd like to put a generator back on. Will a generator power the a/c at all? I really want to keep the a/c since I live in the south. Thanks, Sid

Sure, the 12 volt generator equipped AC cars had generators till 1963. The factory AC cars used a higher oup-put generator. In place of the 25 amp gen. in 1955 and 30 amp in 1958 and up they had a 35 amp. generator and the correct voltage regulator to go along with it.

I have a generator and regulator in my attic. What would be involved in making them 35 amp? Thanks, Sid

Really nothing could convert the generator. The voltage setting in the regulator could be readjusted to 35 Amps if you could find some one that knew how to do it.

Thanks guys. We've got a couple good generator shops nearby that may be able to adjust the regulator. Does any of the wiring need to be heavier. I assume not since it now handles the alternator. Sid
