Is the vacuum assist shift hooked up or does it have a conversion kit?

If it is an open driveshaft, it isn't a 54 transmission. Need to get the casting numbers off of the trans. Also get the stamped numbers off of the block behind the distributor to pin point what engine you have. With the transmission changed out it could be a linkage or lever problem.

one more thing the engine my buddy says it might be from a 1964 because of the water pump but they did not make 235 in 64 i say its a 54

Thinking back on an old post on this subject, and although it was directed at 216's with stock transmissions "popping" out of 3rd...Wasn't one solution was to add a "shim" between the bottom of the transmission and the bell housing...?

Just a humble opinion here, but if it is linkage adjustment problem and you don't have the vacuum shift, I posted my idea in the 46-48 forum on 9-12-13 post #289114. Perhaps it may help??? If not, perhaps your phone # via PM and I can call you to see if I can help. Sometimes a talk on phone is better than a post.

Best to ya.

I have a similar problem when cruising long distances over a 100 miles or so on the highway. Everything going along smoothly the suddenly she will pop out of gear. Never does it while driving in the city just on the highway and only after driving for about an hour or more. MY FIX WAS A BUNGY CORD from the shifter to the bottom of the seat. cheapest accessory I ever purchased. I call it my anti-slip device!!
