So would stainless be a smart choice when replacing your exhaust system?

If you don't have intentions of having your car judged, that is the ONLY way to go. With an iron system I was replacing it every two years at the most. The stainless has been on 4 of my cars for years without any wear.

Stainless is a great choice if you have your car judged or not. Just a question of cost. VCCA judging doesn't add or subtract points for stainless. Aluminized is also acceptable. Some folks just paint the pipes so they kind of look like bare metal. Hard to keep looking nice, but it can work too.

I've never shown my car at an AACA meet, so I have no idea how picky they are about originality. Yes, VCCA will deduct points for rust (condition).

I did pait(touch-up)my exhaust system prior to VCCA judging this summer,no deductions were received...I would think a new steel system would look close to a stainless system under the car?

Can't speak for individual judges but a minor amount of light rusting would probably be okay as the originals were likely a bit rusty when installed. Most people I know use coated steel which looks enough like fresh bare steel to pass. Stainless is close but generally has a shinier/glossier surface.

I painted it the silver tonight with high heat paint. I want to try to find a new exhaust donut locally before I put it back in. Thanks for the info.
