I took my '48 in for a NYS inspection this morning and on the way, I noticed my speedometer needle has fallen off (it did pass inspeection). Is there any way to get the bezel and glass off the speedometer from the front or does the speedometer have to be removed from the dash. If that needs to be done, I assume it is done from the rear of the dashboard. Any hints? Thanks. Beamer

You will have to "yard" it out so you have access to it. Once out of the dash some careful metal bending and you can take the speedo apart and clean everything up and then replace the needle. (This is assuming the end of the needle shaft was not broken off with the needle.)

That's code for, stand on you head, remove four nuts from the studs and slide out the back of the dash. Be sure to let someone know where they might find you if you go missing!

Inspection?sorry to hear that Beamer,in Wash State no inspections required for vintage cars...The speedo and clock should be a very tight fit and after removal and possibly even re-installation some touch up paint may be required

Unless you want to use a hammer...I suggest going behind the dash... laugh it's easy, don't sweat it...Needles are available from FS...A hammer is funner... laugh

Don't forget to wear safety glasses... laugh

beer2Not only does NY require inspections but if you have the vehicle registered with historical plates, which I do, you have to reregister it every year instead of every two years like regular vehicles. I guess they think us old car nuts have deep pockets! But, like everything else, we are taxed to death and if we are not taxed outright, there are all kinds of taxes disguised as fees. Whoa! Wrong thread!!! Beamer

This may be a repeat.

And disconnect the battery whilst you're a-yarding.

Here in Oregon, if you have YOM (Year of Manufacture) or historical plates, you only have to register the vehicle once and then you never register it again as long as you own the car.

JYD-Same here in Missouri. One time registration no safety or emission inspections.

Best way to get at the underside of the dash, is to pull the front seat and lay down some old blankets. This lets you get under the dash alot easier. I did this when I rewired my 48 last year.

It was in the 90's here yesterday and will be the same today. Too hot for this old man to be crawling up under a dash!
re registrations; I guess some states are more progressive, or at least not as regressive, as NY. Our very wealthy lawmakers have to keep money coming in from somewhere to maintain their lifestyles! Beamer
