I am trying to rebuild my 1953 standard shift transmission, bought an overhaul kit. My trans makes a grinding sound in all gears most of the time.Thought it needs rebuild? Had metal flakes in the trans ,on cleaning inside.Gears look ok. But what do I need to replace? Kit from The Filling Station has two bearings and two sets of neddle berings plus gaskets and seals, but this my first attempt at this, is this a good way to go ? I haven't found anyone that does this type of work. Not sure if I can do what I need to do here. I have taken the transmission apart like it says in the shop mannul and the overhaul booklet that came with the overhaul kit, down to the last two gears in the trans case. Question is- do I need to remove them too?

Stripping the case bare allows better cleaning of all parts.

I'd remove them also. Not much more trouble and you can inspect them for wear, etc.

Good luck with it,

Yes, because thsoe two gears often are worn where they ride on the shafts....especially the large cluster gear. Your 1953 cluster gear may have brass bushings or needle bearings that ride on the shaft. If these items are worn the transmission will make extra noises in the gears.

Ok, looks like I need to remove the rest and start from there.
Thanks for the replys. Hope to see you on the road soon. If I can get it back together and it works.I guess if I can totally rebuild the engine, surely I can put the transmission back together and it will work properly?
